In summer 2017, Washington-based timber giant, Weyerhaeuser, announced their plan to log land adjacent to the beloved trail off of Highway 2. The hiking and climbing communities quickly mobilized for a fundraising campaign to purchase a section of land that the trail traverses. With the help of individuals like you, partners and foundations,
Forterra was able to secure funds and negotiate the purchase a 190-acre parcel from Weyerhaeuser.

“It was a true all-hands community effort,” says Forterra’s president and CEO Michelle Connor in a press release. “I’m humbled and inspired by the huge array of funders and partners who stepped up, from Snohomish County, to fellow nonprofits, recreation groups and outdoor retailers. Washington Trails Association, The Mountaineers, Washington Alpine Club, Outdoor Research and REI played an especially pivotal role.”

More than 600 hikers and climbers donated to Forterra's efforts and more than 1,000 activists raised their voices. In honor of those 1,000 advocates, WTA pledged an additional $1,000 to the acquisition. Thanks in large part to our WTA community, the trees around the Lake Serene trail will continue to stand tall, and the public will forever have access to this iconic hike.
